One wintry Christmas Eve, Martin Luther was traveling home through the woods.  It was a clear, starry night, and the stars sparkled through the branches of the towering evergreen trees.  

Martin Luther was amazed by the beauty of the sight, and wished his wife and children could see it.  So he cut down a small fir tree and brought it into his house.   Then he put candles on the tree branches to shine like stars.

"Come see," he called to his wife and children.  "This is how the stars shone down on Bethlehem long ago, when Jesus was born."

And that was the very first Christmas tree.
